Biophysics

The Department of Physics, in conjunction with the Departments of Physiology, Pharmacology, Human Movement and Exercise Science and other bioscience departments, offers units leading to a major in Biophysics. The course covers the basics of the physics of living systems as well as exciting new discoveries and technologies that are emerging in the overlapping regions of biological and physical science.

Honours and postgraduate programmes in Biophysics may also be undertaken.

Macromolecular ensembles: an introduction to fluid dynamics, diffusion, membrane biophysics and thermodynamics.

Biosystems: natural scaling, energy budgets, atmospherics and ocean currents, bioastronomy and automata.

Sensing: the physics of the eye, vision, colour, the ear, acoustics, ultrasound, sonar and neural processes.

Imaging: electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, PET, ultrasound, 3D transforms, cat scans, MRI, lasers and X-rays.
